Bring Your Own Tree
Bring Your Own TreeOur May meeting, Wednesday, May 24, 2017, 6:30-9:00 at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens will be BYOT – Bring Your Own Tree. Bring a tree to work on, along with tools and wire. Experienced AABS members will be on hand to answer questions and offer advice and suggestions. Whether you are a beginner just learning how to style trees, or a more experienced member with a tree that has you puzzled over just how to proceed, this is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the many decades of experience and expertise to be found in AABS.
Mixed Species Group Design with David DeGroot
Mixed Species Group Design with David DeGrootDavid DeGroot, author of Principles of Bonsai Design, will be our guest speaker at the next meeting of the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, 6:30-9:00 at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Dave, Curator Emeritus of the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection/Pacific Bonsai Museum, will discuss various types of group plantings, the differences between a grove and a forest, what to consider when creating a mixed planting, and arrangements that emphasize depth, density or flow. Dave has been studying and practicing bonsai since 1972 studying in Japan with Yasuo Mitsuya, satsuki with Tatemori Gondo and Hayata Nakayama, and display with Uhaku Sudo. He travels widely to lecture, and has presented programs across the U.S. and in Brazil, Canada, China, England, South Africa, and Venezuela. He is active with several bonsai organizations in the Puget Sound area and nationally. The Hinoki Cypress Workshop, featuring Dave, scheduled for April 27 is full.

Things I Didn’t Know as a Bonsai Beginner 50 Years AgoThe next meeting of the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society will take place on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, 6:30-9:00 at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Jack Wikle, longtime AABS member and nationally recognized bonsai artist, will discuss "Things I Didn’t Know as a Bonsai Beginner 50 Years Ago.” Jack tells us this will be partly reminiscing, but he hopes to do some teaching too . . . sharing his perceptions about bonsai and other trees and how they grow.  Included will be some concepts he sees as under-publicized bonsai understandings.  His alternative title could be “Growing with Trees.” NEW FOR 2017 - One space in each workshop will be filled by means of a drawing. The drawing will take place during the meeting the month before the workshop. Anyone present at that meeting may put their name into the 'hat' for a free spot at the workshop. If the name drawn has already paid for the workshop their fee will be refunded and their space will become available. The drawing for the April workshop will be during this meeting. CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: It is anticipated that construction will be completed by March 22.

Reminder: The first AABS meeting of 2017The first meeting of the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society will take place on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, 6:30-9:00 at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Jon Genereaux from Michigan State University's Hidden Lake Gardens will explain and demonstrate how propagation of coniferous plants from Hidden Lake Gardens famed Harper Collection are grafted at their propagation facility. Jon will also give an opportunity to AABS members to practice the craft with rootstock provided and with scion from the collection.
Construction Update at Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Construction Update at Matthaei Botanical GardensConstruction is underway in the area between the West and Main Entrances. It is recommended that everyone enter through the Main Entrance to gain access to the auditorium where the meeting is held. The construction will also effect access to the Men's Restroom which can only be reached by entering the West Entrance. You may want to bring a flashlight to navigate to the West Parking Lot after the meeting.

June 2016 Monthly MeetingWednesday, June 22, 2016, 7 PM Monthly Meeting of the Ann Arbor Bonsai Society Held in the Auditorium - Matthaei Botanical Gardens Evening Program – Young Choe, a nationally known Kusamono Designer, of Maryland will discuss and demonstrate the creation of a Kusamono. Kusamono refers to a Japanese botanical art that developed alongside bonsai. Kusamono are potted arrangements of wild grasses and flowers in unique pots or trays selected to suggest a season or place. All are welcome.

Visitors To Our Show Tell Us What Bonsai They LikeVisitors to the 2014 Annual Bonsai Show were treated to a beautiful display of bonsai and had an opportunity to tell us what they like. The bonsai that garnered the most interest was a larch forest designed by Alfonso Tercero. This forest is comprised of 3 groups of trees gifted by Bill Heston 4 - 5 years ago. August 2014 Monthly Meeting Wednesday, August 27, 2014 *We Are Meeting In The Bonsai Garden* Arrive by 6:30 PM to talk with the members 7 PM the business meeting will begin. 7:15 PM the evening program will begin. Carmen Leskoviansky, the AABS member who oversees the bonsai collection at MBG, will provide a behind the scene tour of the bonsai collection and discuss current plans and goals of the collection. This program will be a relaxed and intimate examination of the collection.
